How do we know what God is like and what He wants from us? Is there a way for us to know for certain, or are we left to guess His will? The Bible teaches that God does make His will known. Let’s learn how by discussing the doctrine of special revelation.

Special revelation describes the ways in which God reveals what He is like, what He expects, and what His plans are for the world.

The first is through historical events. Studying the past helps us see what God has done and that He has a purpose for everything. Everything He does is for His glory and our good.

The second is through His Word, the Bible. In the Bible, God tells us who He is, what He wants, and gives us everything we need to live a life of holiness. He doesn’t leave us to our own devices, trying to guess our way into the kingdom of God. We can pursue obedience to His commands with His help.

The third is through Jesus Christ Himself. This is the most amazing way of all because Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the radiance of His glory, and the exact expression of His nature. In Him, we see God most perfectly because He is God in human form. And through His death and resurrection, Jesus shows us the depths of God’s love for us.

Ultimately, special revelation is good news because it means redemption has come, and restoration is on the way. And all who desire forgiveness for their sin find it through faith in Jesus.
