I was doing research on the “Gospel Project” curriculum and see a lot of criticism from supporters about learning Old Testament stories based on a fear that people are worshipping the heroes of the faith. I’m just confused. Just because a class teaches their children the stories of Moses, Noah, David, etc… alone without mentioning Christ’s death on the cross, does not mean they are teaching young people to worship or idolize them. When taught accurately, those stories simply do what they were meant to do: teach us about God’s character and his relationship to humanity. Right now, we are learning about the exodus out of Egypt and in that story I learn that the Creator of the world sees the Israelites’ suffering and is compassionate towards them and that He fulfills his promises to them, in HIS perfect timing. The Israelites didn’t believe Moses when he told them God was going to rescue them. The Bible says that is because they were so discouraged at that point. God did not punish their unbelief at that moment either…because He is full of grace and understood it’s because they had lost hope. And then He comes and rescues them. So, just in that small section of Bible, we learn quite a bit about God’s character and to me, it’s those small “bites” of God’s Word over time that helps children learn about God’s love for humanity, as a whole and individually. I think by explaining Jesus’ death and resurrection with every single story and trying to connect the old and new testament, you can confuse young children. Too much, too soon. I work with kinder age so I’m primarily referring to them. I think middle school is a better stage to start helping kids learn how Jesus fulfills Old Testament prophecy and how the Old Testament stories provide symbols of Christ’s salvation. They are better able to grasp those concepts.
Hi, Sheri. I think you have misunderstood the concern expressed about teaching Old Testament stories in isolation. The concern is that often we make heroes of the OT individuals, and while there is much we can and should learn from them, ultimately, we want to point our kids to the true hero, Jesus. Second, we want to be sure to teach the Bible the way Jesus explained it, as one story about God’s plan to redeem people to Himself through Jesus (see Luke 24 for example). So while that does not require talking about the death and resurrection of Jesus every week, it does mean we need to show how God was advancing that narrative. Using the Exodus account you spoke of, what you shared about God is great. But we would add the next step of talking about the greatest way God has rescued people is through Jesus. We believe kids need to hear that. They need to know of the hope of the gospel found only in Jesus Christ.
My church would love to have a simple Gospel Project countdown video. We use it during the middle hour and want everyone to know what is going on. It would be awesome to have a simple gospel project logo with a 5 minute countdown so people have time to grab coffee/drop their kids off. If this already exists could you point me to it? If it doesn’t would you consider making it? Alternatively, would we be able to make our own and use the Gospel Project logo in this way? We wouldn’t sell, share, or make a profit from it. It would just help our sunday morning logistics. Thanks!
A countdown video is included for each unit as part of the videos in the Leader Kit. You could create your own with the logo if you prefer though.
How do you get the leader kit?
Hi, Christopher. You can order leader kits for each volume by clicking Shop at the top of this site, then choosing the volume(s) you need.
