OUR LIVES SHOULD POINT TO JESUS AND PREPARE OTHERS TO KNOW HIM.
SCRIPTURE | Luke 1:5-17; John 1:6-9
CENTRAL TRUTH
John the Baptist’s lifestyle gained the world’s attention, but instead of keeping it for himself and allowing it to inflate his ego, he lived to point to Jesus. John’s purpose was to be a witness to the Messiah so that through his testimony, others would know the Savior.
KEY QUESTION
WHAT’S MORE COMMON: SEEKING ATTENTION FOR OURSELVES OR GIVING ATTENTION TO OTHERS? WHY?
KEEP IN MIND
Some of your students have been let down greatly by others. They’ve experienced broken promises and may have put up walls of distrust, requiring people to prove themselves over time before they believe them. Kept promises build trust; broken promises damage it. When students are hurt by broken promises, they may become hesitant to believe people and God. They don’t want to risk being hurt again. But God isn’t like the people who betrayed us. He isn’t going to break a promise. He never, ever has; He never, ever will. We can help these students see that God’s promises have either already been fulfilled in Jesus’s birth, death, and resurrection, or they’ll be revealed when Jesus returns to make all things new. God deserves their trust. He won’t fail them; He won’t leave them; He has already given His Son for them. God is truth (John 14:6). He is love (1 John 4:8). His Word is sure even when people’s words have failed us.
APPLICATION
WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE SO THAT YOUR LIFE POINTS TO JESUS AND PREPARES OTHERS TO SEE HIM?
THE WIN
FOR THE STUDENT: Our students’ lives can point others to Jesus! They can vocalize their faith and share the gospel with a friend or with someone who sits next to them in class. They can love people who others ignore or make fun of in their schools. They can use godly language and drop the profanity. When they live according to God’s Word, they help introduce lost people to Jesus!
FOR THE LEADER: Your life is a witness to Christ; your life speaks, even if you remain silent; your life can help others find the Light.
