Weekly Leader Training for Students: Unit 24, Session 1—”The One”

July 27, 2026 | Alecia Bryant

We can look to Jesus’s works to settle our doubts.

SCRIPTURE | Matthew 11:1-19

CENTRAL TRUTH

Unbelief separates us from God because it’s the choice to reject what we’ve seen and heard about Jesus. But if we turn to Jesus with our questions, like John, doubt can draw us closer to Jesus instead.

KEY QUESTION

What’s the difference in John’s doubt and the Jews’ unbelief Jesus called out in verses 16-17?

KEEP IN MIND

Students can scroll social media and find influencers for almost anything. If they aren’t careful, reels and stories can convince them that these people have all the answers. Sometimes, other people do have answers and can help them make wise choices. But unless students truly know the people behind the accounts, it’s impossible to trust completely that they are exactly who they appear to be. Students can be inspired by something they read or learn something new from influencers. However, when it comes to doubts about their faith, about Jesus, they need to make sure they’re taking their questions to the right places and holding up the answers against the truth of God’s Word. While going to godly, trustworthy people with their doubts or questions is wise, Jesus should always be their starting point—just like He was for John the Baptist.

APPLICATION

When is it difficult to battle doubt? How does it comfort you to know Jesus meets us where we are, even when we doubt?

THE WIN

FOR THE STUDENT: Students often attempt to hide doubt or stuff their questions down deep, maybe because they fear God’s response. But through the life of Jesus, they can see the Father’s heart for them. They can trust Him with their questions.

FOR THE LEADER: Even as leaders, we wrestle with questions. God isn’t offended by your questions. Instead, He shows you compassion when you bring Him your doubts in an effort to know Him more deeply.
