Like seeds need light, water, and nutrients to grow, we promote spiritual growth by positioning ourselves in the light and walking away from sinful behavior; we nurture the seed of God’s Word by walking with others who seek Him, making godly choices in our entertainment, practicing gratitude, and confessing sin.

Why is having a heart of “good soil” difficult? What does “good soil” look like in someone’s life?

KEEP IN MIND

Your students may feel alone in their struggle to read and understand the Bible. Often, they can use these struggles as excuses and never try to understand Scripture. They make strong efforts to improve in sports or hobbies but give up easily in the struggle to know and understand the Bible. Isn’t this what the enemy would want, though—to deter them from even trying? Other students understand the Word but struggle to allow God’s commands to affect the small and big pieces of their lives. God’s Word is like a seed; it takes root in our hearts and completely transforms us. But we have to nurture it. Students have the Holy Spirit to help them because He wants them to understand His Word! The Lord promised not to leave us unfinished; they can find hope in the truth that God will continue to help them grow, helping them understand the Word and transforming them in the process.

What habits can you begin so that your heart is a place for God’s Word to grow and produce fruit?

FOR THE STUDENT: Students can’t produce fruit on their own, even if they check all of the spiritual boxes. Help students see that the Holy Spirit is the One who empowers them to be more like Jesus!

FOR THE LEADER: As leaders, we sometimes forget that we’re still growing too. When we take steps to root God’s Word in our heart, He will be faithful to grow the fruit!
