This week’s training notes:
This week, your group will be studying Unit 6, Session 4, A Holy People, which focuses on 1 Peter and how as believers we are to be holy as God is holy. Peter tells us how to live as obedient children.
So this week, here are your three things to know, watch, and do as you prepare for this week’s session:
Something to know
As we have been learning about the obedience and disobedience of God’s people, we are reminded of God’s holiness and grace through it all. Read the description about two-sided obedience on page 155 and recount times when God’s people were obedient (or failed to be) in their doing or not doing. Our pursuit of holiness derives from the fact that God is holy. But we can’t do it alone. Whenever you focus on obedience, remind your group members that we can only fight the battle against sin with the help of the Holy Spirit.
Something to watch
For something to watch, we’ve included a link to a sermon by Tony Merida in the Additional Resources called Pursuing Holiness. Here is a quote from his teaching:
“Many think holiness has to do with isolation. If you’re a really a holy person, you’re like a monk, sequestered on the edge of a cliff somewhere, where you would never go around actual people… But we know the holiest person that ever lived was Jesus. And did Jesus ever go around sinners? Yes, all the time and He did not sin. He was not isolated from people, but He was separated from sin.”
Something to do
Consider planning an outreach/service event (volunteering at a food pantry or doing yard work for an unchurched neighbor, etc.) with your group. Ask your group if there is anyone they know who might need a hand from your group. If your group is too large, consider breaking up into smaller groups and planning a service/helps event for a neighbor, co-worker, or friend to show the love of Christ in your community.
